Tradition says that they (duppatas) were introduced as a guardian to women’s modesty. The rectangular piece of cloth was greatly associated with honor showered on her. Over the years the perception has changed. But it has remained an integral part of the wonderful dress called Salwar kameez duppata.
In recent times it is increasingly used as an inspired accessory. Though some women like to wear Salwar Kameez without the dupatta, but this piece of clothe adds a certain degree of completeness to attire. The variety and dupatta is truly impressing. They are made out of different kinds of fabrics like cotton, chiffon, silk, georgette etc. The ones made out of silk and cotton are generally heavy. They often have prints or light embroidery work done on them. While ones made of net, chiffon and georgette is light eight. Often they are translucent and add a playful dimension to the attire. To make them suit the dress, the carry embroidery work in sync with the salwar. The one with prints are also in demand. They can be mixed and matched with several different outfits. The sequined and zari work is commonly seen on the dupatta.
